Holocaust Memorial Day

Today 27 January is Holocaust Memorial Day. An international day of remembrance for the 6 million Jews whose lives were taken during the Holocaust along with millions of others killed.

27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.  This week you may have seen Holocaust Survivors on BBC News discussing their horrific experiences, those they lost and how they survived.  It’s important to hear their stories to share and educate our young people.

The theme of HMC 2022 is One Day for Holocaust Memorial Day

‘Holocaust Memorial Day is One Day – 27 January – that we put aside to come together to remember, to learn about the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and the genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, in the hope that there may be One Day in the future with no genocide. We learn more about the past, we empathise with others today, and we take action for a better future.’ (HMD.org.uk)

“You didn’t think about yesterday, and tomorrow may not happen, it was only today that you had to cope with and you got through it as best you could.”

Iby Knill, survivor of the Holocaust

In College, in our tutorial sessions, we have been working with our students to learn and discuss the atrocities to learn from the Holocaust and genocides – for a better future.
