Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of the IT services at College. For more info please visit our IT Services site on Moodle

Saving work

We have students coming in to see us every day about lost or corrupt files on USB pens/hard drives – please try and avoid storing work on these devices if you can.

Instead try and save your work to your OneDrive (files stored in the Office 365 cloud). On College PCs OneDrive can be accessed in the following ways:

  • Through File Explorer
  • Via the Moodle ‘OneDrive’ tile
  • The ‘OneDrive’ desktop icon
  • Access directly from within Microsoft Office apps

Files in your OneDrive can be accessed from any PC, phone or tablet either from Moodle (Go to https://moodle.wakefield.ac.uk and click on the ‘OneDrive’ tile), or from Office mobile apps.

Free Microsoft Office

With Office 365 every student can install Microsoft Office software at home (Windows PCs/Apple Macs, tablets and smartphones). To install your free copy on your personal computer go to: https://office365.wakefield.ac.uk, sign in with your College username and password, and then click on the ‘Install Office apps’ button.

You can also download free apps for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneDrive from your mobile devices app store. When prompted to sign in to these apps use your ‘student ID + @wakecoll.net’ e.g. ABC12345678@wakecoll.net

College WiFi

The College’s student WiFi network is ‘eduroam’. When selecting the ‘eduroam’ option from a list of available WiFi networks, you will be asked for your College username and password.

To connect to eduroam your username must be in the format username + '@wakecoll.net' e.g.ABC12345678@wakecoll.net

You will be prompted to trust a security certificate with a name ending in 'wakecoll.net'. Please trust this certificate.

There are a few more steps when connecting from an Android device:

  1. Click "Settings" then select "Wireless & Networks" and "WiFi settings".
  2. If WiFi is not enabled, please enable it.
  3. Select "eduroam".
  4. You may now be asked for a password to protect the credential storage on your device. This is a security setting for your device and not your WiFi password. Please enter a memorable password here to continue.
  5. For "EAP method" select "PEAP".
  6. For "Phase 2 authentication" select "MSCHAPv2".
  7. For Android 7.0, 7.1 and 8.0 - Set CA certificate to 'Do not validate'
  8. Enter your Identity as your College username + '@wakecoll.net' e.g. "ABC12345678@wakecoll.net".
  9. Some devices may have an "Anonymous identity" field. Leave this blank.
  10. Enter your College password.
  11. Touch "Connect".

The College WiFi is subject to the same web filtering as found on College PCs.

Email

You can add your College email to your mobile device. We would recommend downloading the free Outlook app from your devices app store for this and choose the Office 365 option when first run. When prompted to sign in use your ‘student ID + @wakecoll.net’ e.g. ABC12345678@wakecoll.net

Reset Password

Our new self service password reset system is coming soon. In the meantime please visit the library counter for password queries, or call 01924 789212 when off campus.
